These are the 2 most common anthurium species

The anthurium comes from South America and consists of more than 600 species. ‘Anthurium’ comes from Anthos (flowering) and Oura (tail). The plant got this name because of it’s flowers; it’s one of the few flowering house plants that blooms all year round. The most common species are the Anthurium scherzerianum and the Anthurium andreanum. In this article we’ll tell you more about these two types of anthuriums and how you can separate them.

Anthurium scherzerianum

The Anthurium scherzerianum is the first anthurium species that was found, and is also the most known. This flower consists of a round or ovoid bract with a thin, curled flower spike. The Anthurium scherzerianum is also called Flamingo plant, because it usually comes in bright pink. But it’s also available in other bright colors, such as orange and purple.

Anthurium andreanum

The Anthurium andreanum looks a lot like the flamingo plant, but has a plastic and lacquer-like shine. In addition, the two species differ in their inflorescence. The Anthurium andreanum doesn’t have a thin, curled flower spike, but has a thick, straight flowering spike. This anthurium can also be recognized by the bract, which has the shape of a heart.
