5 mosquito-repelling plants: ideal for in the garden or on the balcony

Normally the first mosquitoes only bother us at the end of June, but due to the heat they came out a month earlier. And because they are so early this year, there probably will be one or two generations of mosquitoes extra. So it will be a hard summer for people who get stung quickly! Fortunately, there are many resources that keep mosquitoes at bay. Like plants! Ideal for when you have a garden or balcony, but you can also simply put them inside. Here are 5 mosquito-repelling plants:

Lemon balm

Lemon balm contains high levels of citronellal, which gives it its lemony aroma and flavor that bugs find so unpleasant. It’s like citronella, that is often used in bug repellent sprays, lotions and candles. But these products almost always contain other ingredients, so why not go for an all natural and cheap lemon balm plant instead?

Catnip

Cat lovers probably already have this at home, because cats love it. But mosquitoes hate it! Research has shown that catnip is even ten times more effective than DEET, the ingredient used in most commercial bug repellents.

Lavender

Most people love the smell of lavender, but mosquitoes can’t stand it. And it keeps moths, flies and ants away too! Lavender is a really nice addition to your garden, balcony or home because it also has nice purple flowers and calming properties.

Peppermint

Mosquitoes don’t like the scent of peppermint either. And it keeps beetles, ants, aphids and moths away too. So plant this mosquito-repelling plant in your herb garden, and use it to make some fresh mint tea or a mojito! As an added bonus, peppermint can also do duty as itch relief if you do get bitten.

Rosemary

Another great mosquito repellant is rosemary. The woody scent of this herb keeps mosquitoes away, as well as cabbage moths and carrot flies. Rosemary plants do best in hot and dry climates and thrive in containers.

Got stung anyway? Buy yourself a beautiful bouquet, to make yourself happy again 😉
